Teacher Strike Day:
This week primary and secondary teachers will be going on strike on Wednesday 29th of May. Please be prepared for the school to be closed on this day. Please understand that we fully appreciate that this is an inconvenience for you, but we are fully committed to our passion for providing every child with the opportunities and quality education they deserve. We have tried so many other avenues with no success, that strike action is now one of few avenues left for our voices to be heard.

Trash Lab:
Parent volunteers are desperately needed to help with the lunchtime Trash Lab. The Trash Lab is well loved by the children and we need your help to keep it running.  This involves being at school once a month or even once a term from 12.30-1.30pm. We will work in with what best suits you.
To go on the roster, if you have any questions, or would like to pop down one lunchtime to see what it’s all about please email thorringtontrashlab@gmail.com

School Mihi Competition:
We are very excited to announce that Thorrington School will be holding its first ever Mihi Competition this coming Matariki (Week 8, Term 2)! The purpose of the competition is to encourage the confident speaking of Te Reo Māori and to promote it as one of New Zealand’s three official languages! A mihi (otherwise known as a pepeha) is a formal way of introducing yourself in Māori, and can include details such as the names of family members and where one is from. Students at Thorrington School have spent time during Term 1 learning their own mihi, and will be asked to speak it in front of their Homebase during Week 6. Finalists from each Homebase will speak their mihi in front of the whole school during Week 8, and prizes will be awarded for displaying confidence, proper pronunciation and detailed content. It would be great if you could encourage your child to start practising their mihi at home as much as possible. The website https://pepeha.nz/ provides a neat way to formulate a personalised mihi if your child is unsure of what their mihi is. Whether excited or nervous, we encourage all students to do their best and know that they will grow in confidence from this experience.
