Wiki Wha/ Week 4

WIKI Wha / WEEK 4

Wonderful to see lots of familiar faces at our Whanau Picnic on Thursday! A great time to connect with our community and enjoy good kai and waiata with each other. Also great to see so many at our L1 assembly on Friday.

Pepeha

As part of our Inquiry into 'How Can I share and Connect to Others' we have started our learning about our Pepeha. As part of Te Reo Maori learning in the whole School Whaea Debbie started her Tuesday sessions this week and kicked off our Pepeha thinking.  If you are keen to join in at home, here is a great website to get you started - https://pepeha.nz/

Kelly Sports

On Monday we had a chance to be active with Kelly Sports. Each Timatanga Home Base got a free 30 min session which included hurdles, frisbee throwing and Cricket (batting and fielding). We have had lots of inquiries about how to join up to the lunchtime club that runs at Thorrington. We will share details on how to sign up asap, in the mean time feel free to check in with the office for more info.

Here are some photos from the day.

Library Time

On Tuesdays we will visit the school library so this is the day to bring in the Library folder (or any time before hand). Just place books in the Library post box in class and leave the folder on the desk above.

Whole School Assembly

This Friday will be our first Whole School Assembly of 2019. As always we would love as many whānau to attend as possible. Some children will be receiving a Principal Award. We will make contact to invite you if your child is receiving anything at these events.

Whānau Picnic

We warmly welcome all families of Thorrington School to attend our annual Whānau Picnic this Thursday 21st Feb 5.30pm - 6.30pm. Bring a picnic tea and meet up with other members of our learning community.

This is an opportunity to get to know other families across the school and to enjoy our Thorrington grounds together. There will be waiata from the staff and a short address from the Principal Christine Harris at 6pm to welcome you to the 2019 year, but the main focus of this picnic is a relaxed Thorrington family/whānau get together.

Hope to see you there!

Reading Books home this week

In Week 3 we will start to send reading books home. See below for our reading book system as per our Year 2 newsletter (see previous blog post).

Children will bring home 2 instructional readers a week that they have worked on with their guided reading teacher. Having a text over a day or two enables the group to better focus on their goals and look deeper at the guided texts. We strongly encourage you and your child to supplement your at home reading with books of interest from your home collection or the library. One literacy session a week will be run as a Bug Club session, this is an online resource that we use on the ipads (for more information please look at our blog).

Bug Club

Bug Club

During this week your child will get a Bug Club password and QR Code in their notebook. It will look like the image below.

If you have a mobile device you can use a QR Scan App to link to the Bug Club website or you can click on the bug club icon down the side of the Year 2 Blog page, or click here.

Bug Club will have online reading books assigned to each student for their home reading. Once a week, instead of reading with a teacher students will have time to read on Bug Club in class. This can also be their home learning as the website can be accessed on any device from home also. Bug Club books will match reading levels as they are in class. Students have a free choice numerous titles through their Bug club account.

For more information click here for our initial blog post originally shared when we started the Bug Club program at Thorrington School.

WIKI Rua / WEEK 2

Welcome to Week 2, it has been a great few days back at school as students and teachers in Year 2 and across the school have had a chance to reconnect with old friends and make some new connections.

Whole School discovery/Class Time

This was a great chance to get struck into creating, making and thinking. In the Year 2 space we are learning our routines of how to move around and find things we need for our learning. In Week 2 we will be putting these into the context of curriculum learning.

All About Me Bags

A quick reminder we are looking forward to students bringing in their 'All about Me Bags' on Monday. We will start some fun writing activities over the next few weeks based on these.

Forms to Return

Cyber Safety forms can be handed into the office (ASAP) as well as the parent/student forms given out at Whānau Connect regarding 'Enterprise' and 'Growth' - our future Inquiry topics. These can be returned over the next few weeks.

End of Day Routine

At 3pm we will let students out the single door and have asked students to come back in the sliding door if they cannot see their person who picks them up. We will then keep these students in class until 3.10pm. After 3.10pm we will escort them to the office for pick up. If you would to make alternative arrangements to this then just let us know and we will be able to do this (e.g. play on the playground). Homework club are sent over the field as a group as needed.
