Whānau Picnic

We warmly welcome all families of Thorrington School to attend our annual Whānau Picnic this Thursday 21st Feb 5.30pm - 6.30pm. Bring a picnic tea and meet up with other members of our learning community.

This is an opportunity to get to know other families across the school and to enjoy our Thorrington grounds together. There will be waiata from the staff and a short address from the Principal Christine Harris at 6pm to welcome you to the 2019 year, but the main focus of this picnic is a relaxed Thorrington family/whānau get together.

Hope to see you there!

Reading Books home this week

In Week 3 we will start to send reading books home. See below for our reading book system as per our Year 2 newsletter (see previous blog post).

Children will bring home 2 instructional readers a week that they have worked on with their guided reading teacher. Having a text over a day or two enables the group to better focus on their goals and look deeper at the guided texts. We strongly encourage you and your child to supplement your at home reading with books of interest from your home collection or the library. One literacy session a week will be run as a Bug Club session, this is an online resource that we use on the ipads (for more information please look at our blog).

Bug Club

During this week your child will get a Bug Club password and QR Code in their notebook. It will look like the image below.

If you have a mobile device you can use a QR Scan App to link to the Bug Club website or you can click on the bug club icon down the side of the Year 2 Blog page, or click here.

Bug Club will have online reading books assigned to each student for their home reading. Once a week, instead of reading with a teacher students will have time to read on Bug Club in class. This can also be their home learning as the website can be accessed on any device from home also. Bug Club books will match reading levels as they are in class. Students have a free choice numerous titles through their Bug club account.
