Term 3 Week 1

Welcome To Term 3!

Kia Ora Year 2 whanau, great to be back into the swing of things. Our first week was full of excitement as we went on our Inquiry Walk on Wednesday and had our Whole Discovery Day on Friday. The Timatanga News letter is on our Timatanga Blog, click here to read it.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry Walk was the tuning in part of the Term 3 Inquiry. We walked around the local area along Malcolm Ave to the bridge and then through the Donkey Track to Remuera Reserve and back to school. Here are some details about our inquiry for this term.

Big Idea:

Big Question:
How are we connected to our ecosystem?

The definition of Kaitiakitanga is best described in te reo Maori but can be also described as the guardianship of the tangata whenua (land of the people) in accordance with tikanga Maori (Maori culture and traditions).

We are lucky enough to be collaborating with local agencies,  EOS Ecology, Environment Canterbury, the Opawaho Heathcote River Network and Roimata Food Commons, as part of the ‘Strengthening Ecosystems Through Community Guardianship” program.

Term 2 Week 9

Dance Performance for our Buddy Groups

This week we enjoyed the opportunity to perform to our Buddy Reading Groups in Year 4. After weeks of practice we had a great time sharing our chosen dances. Then we got to coach our buddies and actually teach them our dance!  Check out some photos from our Irish Jig, Chinese Lion Dance and South African Zimbole Dance groups.

To end our inquiry we have two great events this week.

St Margaret's Show Performance!

First we have the performance of Alice! by the St Margaret's students. Year 2 were lucky enough to be invited to attend the matinee performance this Monday (July 2nd). A big thank you to Emily's mum, Megan Hurd, who arranged this for us. We have free tickets so all we have to cover is the cost of the bus journey. Thanks for all your permission letters. Email us if you still need to give permission.

Dance Movie Screening - 'Happy Feet'

For our second special event we will be screening the animation adventure comedy 'Happy Feet'.  The Timatanga Team will watch this on Friday 6th July, the last day of term. It is a fun movie all about discovering hidden talents and really links to our Dance Inquiry. The movie is a PG so please see the permission letter below. We will make appropriate arrangements for students not viewing the movie.

Permission Letter

2nd July  2018

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

To round off our Dance Inquiry for Term 2, we plan to hold a viewing of the animation adventure comedy “Happy Feet”. The story of a penguin who feels lost until they discover they can dance!  We will watch the film on Friday 6th July, the last day of Term 2.

This movie is rated PG, so we are asking you for permission for your child to watch it with the team. The story frames the idea of dance as being a way to express yourself and to uncover your talents. This is a great theme for our inquiry into why people dance and the benefits of artistic expression.

Please let your Home Base teacher know if you do not give permission to watch “Happy Feet” this week.

Thank you.
Kind regards,
Timatanga Home Base teachers

Art Attack!

In the final week of term will be running two Art projects - one will be a stand alone art project to develop our visual Arts program and the other will be a continuation of our Geometry Art learning inspired by our trip to the art gallery this term.

Reading Books

As a result of our School Trip and our Art program we will not be sending reading books home in the final week. We encourage you to read 'free choice' books at home with your children for this week and also utilise the bug club books online.

Timatanga Teacher Planning Afternoon

On Tuesday afternoon the Timatanga teachers will meet for their termly planning time. Chris Panther and Carmel Knight will be in the Year 2 space to run our Library and Sports program as normal.
