Week 9

Kia ora,

We have a few tired children after 5 straight days of swimming lessons! Thanks very much to all the parents that have come along to help the children get changed after swimming. It has been very helpful.

Our normal classroom programme has continued albeit at different times. Children should still be bringing a reading book home every night. In maths we have started our measurement unit. You might want to see if they can help you measure some ingredients in the weekend ... never too young to start being able to create a lovely brunch for the family! Today we read a lovely poem about a dragon. Ask your child to show you their dragon creation they made to go along with the poem. Please remember to get your child to return their poetry books next week.

Week 8

Kia ora,

In writing for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori we wrote little booklets in te reo. The children are bringing them home today and we are sure they would love to read them to you.

Measurement - weight
For the next two weeks we are doing a maths unit on measurement. Your child is bringing a note home to remind them to bring a little toy next week that we can use to measure.

Swimming
Please have a named big bag for swimming. Your child will need to fit all their uniform, shoes and towel into while they are swimming. Please name everything - togs, towels, underwear (basically everything that can be removed!).  They may need a little bit more food in their lunchbox for the next two weeks as they will get pretty tired.
Thanks to all the parents that have put their name down to help during the next two weeks.

Week 7

Kia ora whanau,

What a wet miserable week it has been! However, we had a fantastic time with Book Week this week including the highlight of dressing up on Book Character Day. We managed to meet with our buddy class to share who we were and read some books and we also managed a 'mini' timatanga parade! We've loved having Keith in our space this week - thank you to his expertise and time for making the programme continue to run so smoothly.

Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori

Māori Language Week / Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - 9th-13th September 2019
The chosen theme for 2019 is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’.
‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying  - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.
Strength for an endangered language comes from its status, people being aware of how to support revitalisation, people acquiring and using it and from the language having the right words and terms to be used well for any purpose.
Every New Zealander can help strengthen our language. We’re hoping that more organisations, companies and community groups than ever will plan to take part in Māori Language Week 2019. Kia Kaha!
On this site you can find resources, ideas and reports about revitalisation and its increasing success.
It’s a part of the national promotion of te reo Māori undertaken by Crown agencies and coordinated by the Māori Language Commission as part of the Crown’s Māori language strategy, the Maihi Karauna. This strategy supports the revitalisation strategy of Māori and iwi, led by Te Mātāwai.
Te reo Maori is a taonga of Māori, guaranteed under the Treaty of Waitangi. But the Māori Language Act 2016 also makes clear it is for every New Zealander and a valued part of our national identity.

Goals of Māori Language Week

  • Create a positive environment for the use of Māori language.
  • Promote Māori language initiatives and events.
  • Encourage non-Māori speaking New Zealanders to use reo Māori.
  • Encourage speakers of Māori to support others who are just starting out.
  • Encourage community, business, government and media organisations to participate.
  • Promote resources to make Māori language more accessible.
  • Contribute to awareness of the Crown Māori Language Strategy and the Māori and iwi strategy that work together for revitalisation.
The Journey of the Gods was a very entertaining show. Here's a few photos from the show.

Have a wonderful week everyone - and keep dry!!
Nga mihi
