How Maui Slowed the Sun
Some great story book art in HB8!
As part of inquiry last term we looked at Maori art and motifs - especially the Koru . We also read the Maori Legend 'How Maui Slowed The Sun'
We drew our own suns with vivid marker and then we painted with dye. We drew silhouettes of Maui and his four brothers. We then learned how to finger knit so that we could make ropes that Maui used to catch the sun.

Matariki Workshops @ South Learning Centre
This week Year 2 took it in turns to have some workshops at The South Learning Centre. We learnt about the Maori New Year Celebration of Matariki!
After we explored what it means for New Zealand, we looked at the same celebration around the world.
Then we drew the stars of Matariki on the ipads. When we had finished we published them onto the big screen to share!
After that we had a quiz to see if we could remember some facts.
Next we made some Porotiti using Maori symbols and string.
Finally we read a story and then walked back to Thorrington School.
What a great day!
